Help you meet the National Geography Standards by linking exotic species activities and projects from this workshop to these standards.

Enhance information sharing among students and teachers engaged in the study of geography and social studies.

Facilitate community awareness of exotic aquatic species and improve understanding of how these species affect humans and how humans affect their dispersal and population distribution.

WORKSHOP ONE: July 11-12, 2000.
The first session will be held at Lake Fausse Point State Park (lakefaus03.jpg (15546 bytes) lakefaus08.jpg (14418 bytes)), located near St. Martinville, Louisiana.  It is an overnight workshop that will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11th and conclude in the afternoon on Wednesday, July 12th, 2000.  The Louisiana State Parks will provide complimentary accommodations in the park’s cabins.  Lunch and dinner on Tuesday and breakfast and lunch on Wednesday will be provided.

The purpose of the first workshop is to introduce teachers to educational materials that are available on the topic of aquatic exotic species.  Presentations by experts on several of our local exotic species, such as giant salvinia, nutria, green crabs, hydrilla, purple loosestrife and zebra mussels, will be interspersed among hands-on activities that teach concepts central to the topic of exotic species.  Part of the workshop time will be devoted to the development of environmental stewardship projects that will take place during the school year with students in local communities that will disseminate exotic species information.

After the community awareness projects are completed during the school year, we will ask the teacher and students to prepare a PowerPoint presentation describing their stewardship project.  These environmental stewardship projects will be collected into a compendium of projects that will be published both as a hard copy and as an internet document.  Selected workshop participants will present these stewardship projects at a national geographic education meeting.  Teachers will also be invited to contribute to a collection of exotic aquatic species activities written specifically to teach geography and social studies concepts.

This is to inform the workshop entitled “Exotic Aquatics on the Move: Building a Web of Awareness for Geography Educators & Students”, to be held at Lake Fausse Point State Park on July 11-12, 2000.  We will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2000 and end in the afternoon on Wednesday, July 12, 2000.  If you are unable to attend, please contact either Dr. Tony Lewis or Dr. Pam Blanchard as soon as possible.  Refunds of registration fees will be made until 5 p.m., June 27, 2000.
