Workshop Information

New York Sea Grant invites your to attend a teachers' workshop titled:  "EXOTIC AQUATICS ON THE MOVE: Building a Web of Awareness for Geography Educators."   This workshop will be held at the University of Buffalo, US Fish and Wildlife Lower Great Lakes Fisheries Resource Office and the Buffalo State College Great Lakes Center on June 29-30, 2000. We will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 29th, and end around noon. The second day will begin at 9:00 at the Great Lakes Center and end at 3:00 in the afternoon on Friday, June 30th.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:
Increase your knowledge about exotic aquatic species and their impacts on the ecosystem and economy, especially those threatening our aquatic environments.

Help you meet the National Geography Standards by linking exotic species activities and projects from this workshop to these standards.

Enhance information sharing between students and teachers engaged in the study of geography and social studies.

Facilitate community awareness of exotic aquatic species and improve understanding of how these species affect humans and how humans affect their dispersal and population distribution.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WORKSHOP:
Teachers who attend these sessions and a follow-up session at the Aquarium of Niagara in the fall and prepare a classroom activity based on training will receive a $100 stipend.

  Participants will receive free educational resource materials for their classroom.

A trip aboard the G.L. Center's Research Vessel, Aquarius, to sample and monitor exotic species.

A Chance to learn first-hand about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and how it is used by the US Fish and Wildlife Service to track exotic species.

Meet biologists and educators who work with exotic species and who can serve as valuable contacts for your and your students.
