A Guide for Reducing Trash Burning in Your Community

Current Trash Burning Laws in the Great Lakes States

The purpose of this section is to provide a quick reference to your state regulations and to provide other state laws as examples of legislative actions taken to address the issue of household trash burning.  Summaries of the current laws on trash burning in each of the Great Lakes states-as well as citations for the complete text-are provided here.  The laws referenced are current as of October 2006.

The primary focus of this section is on statewide laws, but many counties and municipalities have more stringent ordinances.  A small number of those local ordinances are presented here as samples of the types of regulations that can be implemented.  However, this is not a comprehensive guide to all local burning regulations. Please consult or local fire or environmental management district to find out the legal status of trash burning in your community.
