Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are industrial chemicals that are no longer
in use, but are still prevalent in the Great Lakes food web.
Recent research in children and laboratory animals has revealed that the
behavioral deficits associated with early exposure to PCBs bear many
similarities with the behavioral problems observed in children with
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). These findings suggest that
exposure to environmental chemicals may play a role in this common childhood
disorder.
